u-mee GRC Return2Rugby 10’s Week Two Round-up

Another two great games of rugby in the second Round of the u-mee Gibraltar Rugby Championship 10s.

First up the DHL Europa Stormers faced the In-line Framing Straits Sharks, and it was the Stormers who were first out of the blocks, continuing where the left off last week. They were 15-0 within the first five minutes with a blistering start with credit to Lloyd Brown, who scored a brace with a fair turn of pace on the wing.

But the Sharks settled and came back strong, finishing the 1st quarter with a score of their own. The Sharks were getting back into the game and tightened their defence, but the odd flash of brilliance from the Stormers kept them in front.

As they demonstrated all last season, however, the Sharks are tenacious and each time Stormers seemed to open a gap, they hit back. So much so that by the final quarter they had pulled back the score to 35-30 but, in the dying moments of the game Stormers sealed the victory and with a 40-30 win kept their 100% record intact.

In the second game, the IBEX Buccaneers were looking for their first win and took on a strong and reinvigorated Sovereign Insurance Scorpions.

It was a tighter game than the earlier match but it was a fairly even tussle, with the Buccaneers edging the possession and territory in the 1st quarter and with it they took the lead. They found it hard to break down the dogged Scorpions defence but with a skilful move in the last play of the third quarter they managed to give themselves a bit of comfort and extended their lead to 25-10 going in to final 10 minute quarter. And with their first drive they managed another score giving them an unassailable lead at 30- 10.  It was fitting, however, that the Scorpions kept in the game and managed a consolation score, but it couldn’t bridge the gap and the Buccaneers took the spoils with a final score of 30-15.

After Round 2, it’s only the Stormers that remain undefeated with the Buccaneers and Scorpions, each on one win apiece and the Sharks still looking for their first win.
