The 2019/20 u-mee Gibraltar Rugby Championship was a thoroughly entertaining spectacle. It proved to be a great inauguration for the new home of Gibraltar Rugby at Europa Point, the state-of-the-art Europa Sports Complex.
Despite the season unfortunately but understandably having to come to a premature end due to COVID-19, 21 of the 24 scheduled fixtures were played and completed. The league champions, IBEX Buccaneers, were able to be crowned having racked up just enough points to be uncatchable by runners-up DHL Europa Stormers.
During these 21 fixtures a total of 1,680 minutes of rugby were played, with an impressive 1,199 points scored including 185 tries! 101 of these were converted leading to just under nine tries and five conversions per game (that’s a conversion success ratio of 54.6%); however only four successful penalty kicks were taken this season.
Throughout the season all four clubs competed to a level that proved to be thoroughly entertaining for those both on and off the pitch.
We now look forward to the Rock Cup which we hope will take place within the coming months where the Semi Finals will see IBEX Buccaneers take on In-Line Framing Sharks and DHL Europa Stormers take on Sovereign Rock Scorpions for a place in the Final.
