IBEX Buccaneers Crowned 2019/20 u-mee GRC Champions!

The u-mee Gibraltar Rugby Championship has concluded this seasons league. With the remaining rounds officially cancelled.

The #IBEXBuccaneers have been announced as the 2019/20 league Champions having won the league prior to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Whilst all incoming end of season tours have been cancelled. The GRC Rock Cup is still classed as postponed.

Along with all other sports on the Rock, the Gibraltar Rugby Championship has been
impacted by the current pandemic and the season was brought to a premature end with
the cancellation of the last two rounds of matches.

It quickly became clear that the clubs would not be able to play these remaining games
in the near future and, whilst disappointing not to be able to complete the 2019/20 season, the decision was made to formally conclude the league and award the championship to the IBEX Buccaneers.

They have been the outstanding team of the season with 10 wins from 11 games and, in fact, they had already all but settled the league title with a win over their nearest rivals,
the DHL Europa Stormers, in an epic top of the table clash on 15 February.

With victory against the Sovereign Rock Scorpions at the beginning of March they sealed the league title having amassed 52 unassailable points.

Finally, it has been a pleasure to play our games this season at the new home of
Gibraltar Rugby, the Europa Sports Park. The facility, whilst currently serving the community as a nightingale hospital, has enabled Gibraltar Rugby to enjoy its own bespoke facilities for the first time, which has made a huge difference for the players and transformed the club game locally. With open access we have seen a growing number of spectators enjoying entertaining u-mee GRC fixtures.

We look forward to getting back on the pitch whenever safe to do so and, in the meantime, keep safe.
